This bicycle began its life in the early 1960’s as a Hawthorne 3-speed. Hawthorne
was the house brand of the historic American mail order/department store retailer
Montgomery Wards.A time when one could buy a quality bicycle
from a department store.

The Hawthorne has been with the FMCBW since our first location on north
University Drive. However, with each move more and more of the original parts
were lost. Rather than relegate this beautiful lugged, English-made, steel frame to
recycling we decided on a full FMCBW customization.

Frame was stripped to bare metal and powder coated
Bottom bracket shell was chased and faced for a modern sealed-bearing
bottom bracket
Mirror-polished crankset with Surly stainless steel chain ring.
Hand-built All City/Sun Rims/DT Swiss wheel set
Flip-Flop hub: ride fixed or free!
Civia bamboo fenders
Michelin tires
WTB saddle
Many other new parts

bamboo fender close up

This bicycle is truly one of a kind. Own a piece of history and support the FMCBW! The Hawthorne will be up for silent auction, this Friday at Art in Action.

We will be having bike sales on Saturday September 3rd and Saturday September 10th from Noon to 5pm at our shop (209 NP Avenue, Fargo) to clear out some of our fundraiser bike inventory! Stop by for great deals on bikes!

Our fundraiser bikes are previously owned bicycles that have been lovingly overhauled by our volunteers (and checked for safety by an expert mechanic) and are available for purchase. Even better, all of the proceeds go to pay our rent, utlities, and other bills so if you purchase a bike you get the added benefit of helping us continue to be an awesome resource for the community. That is what the cools kids call a “win-win situation”.

Speaking of win-win situations, if you don’t find a bike that suits you at our sale you can always participate in our work-trade program where just 5 hours of volunteer work get you a bicycle to overhaul and take home! No cost! Open to everybody! So, not only do you get a bike but also hands on bike mechanic training you ALSO get to to help us provide service to other patrons! That is, like, win-win-win. At least.

Hope to see you in the shop.
